There are moments in music that never happen the same way twice.
In January, we were in artistic residence at the Lino Ventura Theatre in Nice, for a live session with my trio. Me with jazz harp and singing, Nicolas Luchi bass, mix and mastering Cédric Le Donne drums – three musicians, three artistic paths
I remember the stage, the light… and that cold. It was unusual for Nice. It wouldn’t leave the hall. When we started the first take, I couldn’t feel my fingers. Literally. Cédric was laughing. Nicolas was trying to hold it together. We just went with it.
That's a live session too. Before the music, there is the reality
The microphones that don’t all respond. The cameras to coordinate. The take we start just as a test, to make sure the sound comes through, that the recording is running, that everything holds. That suspended moment before pressing rec. For real.
The first day, we searched.
Sounds, shapes, balance. Nothing was fixed. There was searching, and some laughter too. And little by little, something found its way.
On the second day, everything was there.
We recorded not one piece, but four. Among them, Rachenitza: a Bulgarian rhythm in 7/8, grounded in the body, transformed through the meeting of our three journeys. Jazz, blues, improvisation. The jazz harp sings, dances, and responds to bass and drums.
The live version is more raw. More spontaneous. We didn’t go back.
We’re proud of this first step.
Not because everything was perfect. But because we went for it - frozen fingers, laughter, moments of searching included. And we were right to do it.
And that’s when the music comes alive.
